Defeat to Paderborn

10/25/2024

1. FC Köln fell to a 2:1 defeat against SC Paderborn on Friday evening at the RheinEnergieSTADION. Jan Thielmann had given FC the lead, though a Sven Michel brace turned the game in favour of the visitors.

Team news

Gerhard Struber made two changes to the side that started the Darmstadt defeat. Rasmus Carstensen and Damion Downs were replaced by Jan Thielmann and Dejan Ljubicic.

Lukas Kwasniok opted for five alterations after the game against Kaiserslautern last weekend. Pelle Boevink, Laurin Curda, Luca Herrmann, Sebastian Klaas and Sven Michel were replaced by Markus Schubert, Marcel Hoffmeier, Luis Engelns, Aaron Zehnter and Ilyas Ansah.

Level at the break

The first-half produced little in the way of chances for both sides. Eric Martel’s goalbound header midway through the first period was blocked at the near post, while Jonas Urbig was required to make a great save to keep out Koen Kostons after a Ilyas Ansah header.

Michel turns game around

FC started the second-half with promise and went ahead in the 66th minute. Jan Thielmann had a go from 20 yards, catching a half-cleared corner cleanly on the volley and finding the bottom corner.

That joy would last just 10 minutes, however. Adriano Grimaldi was able to bring the ball down on the edge of the area and tee up Sven Michel to slam home from 16 yards, with both substitutes combing to devastating effect.

Michel wasn’t done there and stole a march on the FC defence to nip in at the near post from Santiago Castenada’s clever cross. FC failed to produce a clear chance in the final minutes, as Paderborn turned the game around to secure three ponts. FC are next in action on Tuesday, 29th October against Holstein Kiel in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Kick-off at the RheinEnergieSTADION is at 20:45 CET.
